Getting ready to try escape rooms for the first time in Budapest?
Don’t worry! With Neverland’s tips for first-time escape room adventurers, you will have a much better chance of succeeding with your friends in the capital of Hungary, or any other city you choose for your next exit game!
No time to waste, let’s dive right in!
First-time tip number 1: Balanced teams make for a successful (and fun) escape room adventure
One of the most common worries of people who try out escape rooms for the first time is that they won’t be able to bring anything useful to the team.Â
Forget about that!Â
No matter what you do in life, each person brings a unique strength to the table, whether it’s logical thinking, creativity, keen observation or simply good company! Our tip is to bring a well-rounded team with diverse skills and perspectives – this will increase your chances of covering all bases and overcoming a variety of puzzles.Â
First-time tip number 2: Communicate effectively during the escape room challenge!
It’s not a cliché, communication is the cornerstone of any successful escape room experience, whether it’s your first time or not.
Our tip is to encourage everyone to voice their thoughts. Share every discovery, no matter how trivial it seems, because the smallest detail could be the key to a major puzzle!Â
Listening is equally important, try not to get too lost in your thoughts. You never know, someone else’s observation might trigger an idea in your mind!
At Neverland’s escape room bar in Budapest, we’ve often seen some last-minute bursts of inspiration that led to victory when it seemed like time was about to run out!
First-time tip number 3 for escape rooms: “Divide et Impera!” (divide and conquer)
People who enter escape rooms for the first time should be aware that this will be a time-sensitive adventure. Keep our time management tips in mind to make it out before your 60 minutes run out!
Do as the Roman Empire did: divide and conquer! Split up and start exploring different areas.Â
Assign tasks based on each person’s strengths. Interpreting abstract clues or solving numerical puzzles successfully relies on having the right person for the job!
This approach ensures that you cover more ground quickly and avoid scenarios where literally every member of your team is stuck on the same puzzle.
First-time tip number 4: Try and stay organized to keep track of escape room clues
Believe it or not, being organized during your escape room challenge also plays a large role in making your first time a success.
Our tip is to keep track of all the clues and items you find and make a mental note of which ones have been used and which are still in play. You can also assign this task to a specific team member with the best memory among you!
- It can also be useful to designate a spot in the room where you can place items that you previously used for solving certain puzzles, so you don’t waste time revisiting them.
- If you find something that doesn’t make sense immediately, don’t waste too much time on it. Put it aside but keep it visible! Its true purpose might become relevant as you uncover more clues in the escape room.
First-time tip number 5 for escape rooms: Think outside the box
Neverland’s escape rooms in Budapest have been designed and built to challenge your conventional thinking.Â
Our tip to all first-timers: don’t limit yourself to the obvious solutions! Some answers require a bit of imagination. If you’re stuck, try to approach the problem from a different angle and brainstorm freely with your team!Â
Sometimes, even the craziest ideas can lead you to the solution. Rely on ALL your senses during your escape room adventure!
First-time tip number 6: Pay attention to every detail in the escape room
You know what they say, the devil is in the details. The same is true for escape rooms.Â
One of the most underrated first-time tips we can give you is to carefully examine everything. Clues can sometimes be well-hidden from you, or hiding in plain sight, often disguised as ordinary elements of the room’s décor.
Also, while attention to detail is key, no clue will require you to prove your physical strength. So, you know, please don’t try to rip out anything!
First-time tip number 7: Keep calm, play it cool, take it easy!
First-timers should know that escape rooms are designed to test your ability to think under pressure. With the clock ticking down, it’s easy to feel stressed or even frustrated.
However, staying calm and focused makes it much more likely that you will spot the right patterns and connections among the clues you’ve encountered. If you hit a roadblock, take a moment to breathe and reassess the situation. Sometimes stepping away from a puzzle for a few minutes can provide a fresh perspective!
Also, remember this is a game: encourage your team to stay positive and support each other, you’re here to have fun, right?
First-time tip number 8: Use hints, but use them wisely!
Another common worry of first-time escape room adventurers is what to do if they get stuck. Our tip for this scenario is easy to follow: just use the hints you have! Neverland’s game masters will closely follow your progress and provide help accordingly.
- Use hints with care! Remember, part of the fun is the challenge and the satisfaction of solving the puzzles on your own, so try not to rely on hints too frequently.
- Don’t be too proud to ask for a hint! The other main scenario we’ve often seen at Neverland are teams who want to solve all puzzles without any hint, even if they’ve been stuck on the same puzzle for a very long time. In cases like this, we think it’s better to use a hint and move forward than to waste precious time and get needlessly frustrated.
First-time tip number 9 for escape rooms: Build on each other’s ideas!
People who try out escape rooms for the first time should also keep in mind that they won’t be alone trying to get out in time.
Our tip may seem trivial but it can often get lost in the frantic confusion of trying to find new clues: WORK TOGETHER!
There’s a reason why we usually suggest a team consisting of at least 4 people for these games. While it’s certainly not impossible for 2 people to get out in time, it will be much more difficult to do so!
Of course, if you’re looking for some extra challenge, we welcome couples and best friends who wish to try their luck together!
First-time tip number 10: Just have fun (yes, really)!
Above all, the best tip we can give for your first time doing an escape room is to simply have fun. Enjoy the process of uncovering new clues in a carefully designed environment that will take you to another world. Neverland awaits you with 8 different escape room themes:
- Aztec Catacomb
- Jailbreak
- Insane Asylum
- Wizard Trials
- Wild West
- Chernobyl
- Schizophrenic Killer Horror
- Plan Budapest – Bank Robbery
While it may sound clichĂ©, the journey is just as important as the destination. Even if you don’t escape in time, the shared experience and adrenaline with your team is what truly matters.Â
